Why Conditioning Your Hair is So Important
July 30, 2018If you have dry hair, you probably consider hair conditioner to be a must-have part of your routine. But people with oily hair sometimes skip the conditioner, thinking it will make hair worse. The truth is, conditioning your hair is an important step in everyone’s hair care routine.
If you’ve ever seen a strand of hair under a microscope, you’ve noticed that it looks scaly. Those “scales” are cells that overlap each other and form the outer layer of your hair, the cuticle. When your hair is damaged, those cells become frayed and no longer overlap. As a result, the inner layer is exposed to environmental damage and hair becomes frizzy and tangled.
Conditioner comes to the rescue by creating a protective shield over these cells, smoothing each hair strand and protecting it from damage. When hair strands are smooth, they no longer look frizzy and don’t tangle as easily. Hair is soft and under control.
Every hair type needs conditioner. The difference is the type of conditioner to use. People with oily hair still need to protect that outer layer of hair – they just need a conditioner that is oil-free and formulated specifically for their hair type. No matter what your hair type, consult your stylist, who can recommend the best product for your individual needs.
Apply conditioner from the middle of your hair toward the ends, not at the root or on your scalp. Hair close to the scalp is newer, so the middle and ends, which are older, can benefit most from conditioning.
Condition regularly at home, after each shampoo. Some hair needs conditioner every day, although washing every day can actually be a problem, stripping away too many natural, protective oils. A good rinse followed by a small amount of conditioner can do the trick on days when you skip the shampoo.
Speaking of rinsing, be sure to do that well after letting your conditioner soak in to remove all residue.
Occasionally, you may need a deep conditioning treatment. If your hair is dry or damaged, ask your stylist how often you should make appointments for the treatments. Your stylist knows your hair well and can give you the best advice to keep it soft and healthy-looking.
