Smart Summer Haircare
July 20, 2017It’s summer – and the fun in the sun we’ve been waiting for all year is finally here. But all exposure to bright sunshine, swimming pool chemicals, and humidity can do a number on your hair. Fortunately, following just a few tips will help keep your hair looking soft and smooth between salon visits:
Choose a loose hairstyle that keeps your hair up and allows air to flow through, which will cut back on sweating. Ask your stylist for a relaxed summer style – and for tips on the easiest way to keep the style looking fresh and polished.
To prevent drying, don’t wash too often during the summer. Fewer washes keep your hair from overstripping and allow natural oils to moisturize.
If possible, eliminate the hot styling tools during the summer months. Your hair already fights extra heat from the sun, so less exposure to blow dryers, curling irons and straightening tools will avoid their drying effects.
Wear a large-brimmed hat – or a scarf over your hair – to protect it from damaging UV rays.
Summer heat can dry out your hair, so condition every time you wash, and use a deep conditioner at least once each week.
Don’t forget the sunscreen for your hair. Ask your stylist about shampoos, conditioners, and treatments with UV protection, or simply run your fingers through your hair after applying sunscreen to your body.
Before swimming, drench your hair with clean water or apply a leave-in conditioner to resist chlorine damage. After swimming, rinse thoroughly with clean water in the shower, if possible.
If humidity leaves your hair unruly, try some healthy oils to combat frizz. A few drops of argon, olive or avocado oils can help keep things smooth.
