Care for Your Color-Treated Hair

If you are considering a new hair color for spring, or if you’ve already made the leap to a new color, you may be wondering about the best way to keep your color vibrant and shiny – and your hair healthy-looking. Here are some tips for maintaining your fabulous new color:

Wait a few days for your next shampoo. Your new color needs time to set, so many stylists recommend a minimum 48-hour wait (longer, if possible) before you shampoo your hair. This allows time for the cuticle layer to reclose after opening in the coloring process, sealing in the color, which can take as long as 72 hours.

Use the best products. Ask your stylist to recommend hair care products that are specifically formulated for your hair type and for color-treated hair. Sulfate-free products work best for maintaining color.

Wash less frequently. Shampoo your hair less often to avoid over-stripping your hair of its natural oils and to maintain color. Invest in a good dry shampoo to use on those in-between days.

Always condition. Conditioning is crucial for your hair, regardless of hair type. Even on days you don’t wash, rinse your hair and follow up with conditioner. Ask your stylist to recommend the best deep conditioner for your hair, and use it at least once a week. Consider using leave-in conditioners for extra protection and softness.

Avoid (or reduce) heat exposure. Heat is the enemy of healthy-looking hair, so whenever possible, avoid or reduce the use of heated styling tools. Dial back the heat in your shower and rinse your hair with cooler water. Reducing heat is especially important immediately following your hair coloring treatment. Consider switching to a style that allows you to avoid the blow dryer. If that’s not an option, use a heat protectant product before styling.

Visit your stylist often for trims. Make it a habit to get regular haircuts to rid your hair of split end damage and to prevent splitting or breakage. Everyone needs regular trims, but this is especially important for color-treated hair.
