Tips for Tame Winter Hair

February 9, 2017

It’s cold outside! We still have a couple more months of cold weather ahead, and you may have noticed the toll that it’s already taking on your hair. Cold outdoor weather and dry, heated indoor air can make your hair dry, brittle, and full of static.

Conditioning your hair is crucial now. Even on days that you don’t shampoo, be sure to use conditioner – a leave-in conditioner may do the trick. If your hair is very dry and brittle, ask your stylist about a deep conditioner and advice about styling products that don’t dry out your hair. Your stylist may also recommend a shampoo formulated for dry scalp for the winter months.

Hot showers can also dry out your hair. Consider skipping some washes and using a dry shampoo instead. Switch to a different shampoo once a week to avoid the drying effects of build-up. When you step out of the shower, be sure to use a wide-tooth comb to avoid damage to your hair.

If you have a problem with static, products containing silicone amodimethicone may help. This ingredient prevents friction and neutralizes static. A light coating of vitamin E oil may also help.

Hot blow dryers also damage hair. Consider switching up your hairstyle for the winter to avoid extra damage and dryness. If you must blow dry, use a heat-protective spray.

Other tips include taking a vitamin E supplement (always ask your doctor first) and wearing a hat outdoors to protect your hair from the winter weather.
