Skin Care to Fight the Winter Flakes

January 27, 2019

Every season has its beauty challenges, and winter is certainly no exception. During the cold winter months, humidity is lower, and the air is much dryer. Couple that with the indoor heated air, and you get a recipe for very dry, flaky skin that can cause your makeup to look caked on and flaky as well. The solution is upgrading your skincare routine to better moisturize in the winter months.

As the outer layer of your skin cracks, its moisture barrier is compromised. While the humidity of the summer meant using lighter products, winter generally calls for heavier creams to lock moisture in place, and this is true for all the products in your skincare routine.

Cleansers. While a light gel or foam worked really well in the summer, people with dry skin may want to switch this out for a cream-based cleanser. This will wash away dirt and makeup while infusing your skin with some much-needed extra moisture.

Toner. Toners are still important because they balance your skin and sometimes infuse vital nutrients, but for the winter, switch to a moisturizing toner, especially if your skin tends to be dry.

Exfoliants. While regular exfoliating is important for skin year-round, the type of exfoliant may need to change in the winter. Your regular scrub, which uses physical exfoliants to clean deep, might be a bit harsh for skin when it’s cold and dry. Instead, try using chemical exfoliants like alpha hydroxy acids, enzymes, or beta hydroxy acids, which will do the trick without causing excess dryness.

Serums. Serums are an important part of your skincare routine, especially in the winter. They’re a concentrated way to infuse antioxidants and hydrate, so ask your skin care professional about the best serums for your individual needs.

Moisturizer. Last, and certainly not least, a good moisturizer is your best defense against flaky, dry winter skin. Instead of a light lotion, use a heavier cream moisturizer in the winter, especially if your skin tends to be dry. This applies to all moisturizers you use, including under-eye treatments and body lotions. Use a thicker lotion that can retain better moisture for your skin. Always look for a product with sunscreen protection, even during the winter, because harmful UV rays do pass through even on cloudy, cold days.
