How to Properly Care for Your New Hair Extensions

August 30, 2022

When you invest in something you naturally want to take as good of care of it as possible so that it will last. If you’ve recently invested in hair extensions this has probably been on your mind, and for good reason. If extensions aren’t properly cared for they can become brittle and damaged and start to break off and shed. We have some care tips to share with you that will help you properly care for your new extensions to extend their life and make sure you get the full use out of your investment.

Washing

Limiting how often you wash your extensions will allow them access to your natural oils which will condition and protect them just as it does your own hair. Washing your hair and extensions a little less often can help keep both looking shiny and healthy. Most people only need to wash their hair a couple of times per week. Any more than this can over-strip strands and leave them dried out. You can always use a dry shampoo in between washes to freshen up both your natural hair and extensions when needed.

Sleep In Braids

When you’re wearing extensions you want to reduce the number of tangles you get while sleeping to avoid damage from detangling. One of the best ways to do this is to loosely braid your hair before you turn it in for the night. By containing your hair and extensions in a braid you’ll reduce tangling and in turn reduce stress on your extensions caused by excessive detangling.

Condition Them

Conditioner is important for healthy hair, and it’s even more important for hair extensions. Extensions don’t have the benefit of having roots in your scalp which means that the natural oils from your scalp have a harder time coating and nourishing the extensions. So be sure to regularly use a hydrating conditioner that is free from alcohol, parabens, and sulfates to give your extensions the moisture they need to stay strong.

Brush Better

You need to be more careful and intentional when brushing your extensions. You need to brush more often to keep tangles to a minimum and brush more gently to avoid excessive stress on your extensions. Start brushing from the bottom and work your way up gently working out any knots and tangles as you go. Eufora Beautifying Elixirs Leave-In Repair Treatment will help to detangle and then go on protecting and conditioning all day.

Turn Down the Heat

Some heat styling is fine for your extensions, but too much heat is not good for them or your natural hair. So use no-heat hairstyles and air dry your extensions when you can, and when you do heat style use the lowest setting and apply Eufora Thermal Defense Prep before you start to protect from heat damage.

Use Extension-Friendly Products

If you’re new to wearing hair extensions you may not be aware that certain ingredients in hair care products can be damaging to extensions. It’s important to limit the amount of dehydrating ingredients, like alcohol, in your products. You want to make sure that anything you put on your extensions is moisturizing and hydrating, not stripping moisture away. So it’s important to heed your stylist’s recommendations for products to use on your extensions.
