Balayage or Ombre- What’s the Difference?

May 15, 2022

When it comes to hair color trends, the top picks for quite a while now have been balayage and ombre. These are both excellent ways to highlight your hair and add so much interest. Many people seem to think they are the same thing, but balayage is actually a highlighting technique while ombre is a style of highlights.

Balayage

The word balayage is derived from French. It quite literally means sweeping, which is exactly what the stylist does with the hair color as they apply it to your hair. This freestyle hand painting highlight technique produces natural-looking results that give your hair the look of being kissed by the sun. The contrast between your base color and a highlight is typically subtle with balayage which means your roots blend in as new growth appears helping your color last longer.

Ombre

The word ombre is also derived from French where it means shaded or shading. This style of highlights often has a stark contrast beginning with dark roots and gradually fading to a much lighter shade at the tips. Ombre also typically consists of more than one color and works quite well with fantasy colors. Your strands can transition from brunette to blonde, purple to pink, or any other color combination you can imagine.

Low Maintenance

If you’re looking for low-maintenance hair color, either balayage or ombre could be your answer. If you choose highlight colors that are in the same family as your natural color your roots will blend seamlessly as they grow out. This means fewer touch-ups will be needed to keep your color looking fabulous.
