5 Tips for Cold Weather Haircare

December 15, 2020

The colder weather is here – and for some, that can mean frizzy, unruly hair. When the weather turns cold, your hair needs special care to look its best, so today we’ve put together the best tips for cold weather haircare that will keep that frizz at bay.

Beat the heat. The weather is cold outside, but our hair is exposed to plenty of heat in the winter that can leave it dry and frizzy. Indoor heaters make things feel toasty, but they also remove all the moisture in the air – and in your hair. There’s no escaping the heaters, but you can opt for less heat when you’re styling and showering. Choose styles that reduce the time you spend using heated styling tools like the blow dryer and flat iron, and when you must use heated tools, use a professional heat protectant product before styling. In the shower, turn the heat down just a notch when you rinse your hair to give it a break from the heat.

Condition more often. Everyone needs a hair conditioner, even if your hair is oily. The trick is finding the right professional product for your hair, so ask your Anna’s Salon Elite stylist to recommend the best option for you. If you have dry hair, you need regular professional conditioning treatments on top of your daily routine, so make an appointment for a Powerdose or Spa Conditioning Treatment for extra protection from the frizz. You can even use a leave-in conditioner to help cut down on static electricity and frizz if needed.

Shampoo less often. The opposite is true for shampooing – most people shampoo too frequently. The more you shampoo, the more you risk stripping your hair of its natural oils, which come from the scalp and keep your hair soft and control frizz. Most people don’t need to shampoo more than 2-3 times per week, and you can use dry shampoo on in-between days.

Wear a hat. Protect your hair from winter damage by wearing a hat when outside in the cold. Hats protect you from harsh outdoor elements so that your hair is less prone to damage. Here’s a bonus tip – choose a hat with a silk or satin lining for the best protection for your hair.

Avoid going outside with wet hair. While it’s important to cut down on blow drying, it’s also important to avoid going outside with wet hair. That’s because wet hair is damaged easier than dry hair, so stay inside if you can until your hair is completely dry.
